The bushfires that have killed so many people in Victoria are terrible, horrible and sad. There is no discussion about that. And I, unusually, don’t want to use the occasion to get up on my soap box. But it is worth heading the words of Greens senator Bob Brown, who today said:
“Global warming is predicted to make this sort of event happen 25 per cent, 50 per cent more… It’s a sobering reminder of the need for this nation and the whole world to act and put at a priority our need to tackle climate change.”
It’s silly to keep thinking the effect of climate change are a long way in the future. We can see them now. And they are not good.
We have a moral imperative to act. Not just for future generations, but also in our own self-interest.
