Marx said religion was the opiate of the people. Is sport today’s opiate? Or is it, as Nelson Mandela said, more powerful than governments in bringing about social change? Recent events surrounding Adam Goodes show that racial and cultural tensions ripple beneath Australia’s fierce love of sport. Author Martin Flanagan (The Short Long Book), journalist and commentator Stan Grant (Talking to My Country) and writer Erin Riley (contributor to From the Outer) discuss with Sam Mostyn the systemic prejudices playing out in sport today, and how far we are from a level playing field.
