A heat-inspired rant on warming

It’s 42 degrees C in Sydney today.  I am hot, and I am pissed off.

I was at an event this week that discussed global warming.  I shouldn’t share any more specifics of the event, but it was attended by lots of men in their 50s, and the general vibe in the room was to complain about how much a carbon emissions tax will cost them.  Despite remarkable concessions granted to this particular industry, and it being an industry that could largely benefit from an increased awareness about Climate Change, all they did was complain.

They need to shut the **** up.

I am sick to death of people complaining about how much things are going to cost them.  I am sick of people being unwilling to sacrifice ANY part of their lifestyle.  I’m sick of people complaining about what it will cost.

Some industries are going to die.  Some lifestyle habits aren’t going to be sustainable.  Some people will lose jobs.  We’ll probably all have less disposable income.

Deal with it.

I am fed up with these baby boomers complaining.  They know full well that the full effects of climate change won’t be felt in their lifetime so the answer, obviously, is to do nothing.

Climate Change is not debatable.  It’s not a myth, or a conspiracy.  It is real.

What’s more, the free market won’t be able to convince people to make environmentally responsible decisions- the lag between cause and effect is far too great.  We will need governments to intervene to make sure the decisions that are made today reflect their true cost.  Because climate change won’t hurt the Baby Boomers.  It won’t hurt most of the current CEOs and world leaders.  It’s a problem from which, by virtue of their age, they are protected.

But there’s a good chance it’ll happen in my lifetime.  There’s a much better chance it’ll happen in my children’s, should I one day have kids.

We’ll have the unbearable heat, the insufficient access to water, the rising oceans, the unlivable cities.  We’ll have problems with our food supply, we may well run out of oil.

So you know what, older-folk-complaining-about-the-cost-of-climate-change: Stop being so FREAKING selfish.  Stop being greedy.  Stop thieving from your grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Action on Climate Change- and real action, not this wimpy pseudo-action- is a moral imperative.

So SHUT UP to all those people complaining about how action on climate change will cost them. It’ll cost all of us.  But NOT doing anything will cost my generation a hell of a lot more.  So suck it up, quit your whinging, and take responsibility for a mess you had a big part in creating.

  1. You seem pretty cluey on the matter, so why not ring up Brian Wilshire on 2GB 873am on weeknights? He’s always asking for warmists to debate him on air about climate change, but no-one ever seems to take him up on the offer.

The number is 13 13 32. Do it, Erin! Do it! I’d love to hear it.

  2. Oops! That was the number for 2UE, it’s actually 131 873 on 2GB. But either way, Jim Ball on 2UE invites callers to come and prove him wrong on AGW.

  3. There are people who know the science much better than I. I am simply wholly convinced by their arguments that anthropogenic global warming is real.

  4. I’m with Erin – calling these sorts of people is not going to help, particularly as he will want to discuss the science.

I agree so much with this post. It seems like the more we (Gen Y) care about something, the more (the majority of) baby boomers try to take it apart.

I think being angry is the only choice – otherwise its too easy to be complacent. Stay angry Ez!

  5. I’ll be staying angry with you Erin. The selfishness of some industry leaders is unfathomable. I whole-heartedly agree that it is a moral imperative to act on climate change. On an individual level, industry level, government level – we need every part of society to rethink the way stuff happens, because the way stuff happens now is how we ended up where we are. We are going to bring about the extinction of our species, through selfishness and stupidity. I want to stay positive about the possibilities COP15 hold for government level policy implementation, so I will. We need our leaders to commit to the numbers, then we need to make it happen, we’ve only got one go at getting this right.

  6. You guys might not want to discuss the science, but either way, I’d love to see Al Gore and Christopher Monkton duke it out on the subject.

Personally, my solution would be a $100 trillion air conditioner the size of Mt. Everest powered by a zero-point module that uses a matter bridge between alternate universes transferring matter through subspace, with the hot air from our reality then transferred through to an alternate dimension. This would be functioning technology that literally moves heat from our space/time and vents it out into another space/time. The cool air would be coming from the planet Hoth.

    I’m a genius.

  7. Unfortunately it appears that you have been conned by the media and politicians who are running an agenda for total control of the world. There is no actual evidence to suggest that global warming is caused by people, the media just likes to pretend that there is. The fact of the matter is that we will be paying a lot more for everything to fund a one world government.
The recent “climate gate” emails have shed some light into the collusion of climate “scientists” to disrepute skeptics and modify data to suit their agenda. The Liberal Party are in ruins, the ETS won’t get through and Copenhagen will be a big wash.
Also, weather is not climate. El niño does funny things sometimes.
