4. Fionn Regan, The Basement, February 2007
Fionn Regan is an awesome Irish singer, whose songs are quite folk-y. I got his album when it first came out and completely fell in love with it. Here’s one of my favourite songs, with one of the coolest video clips I’ve ever seen:
Anyway, he was announced to play at Laneway, but I didn’t want to pay a heap of money to only see a short set and I wasn’t heaps fond of any of the other acts at the time (how little I knew!! Peter, Bjorn and John AND Yo La Tengo. It’s one of my great regrets).
So when he was announced as the opening act at the Damien Rice gig at Enmore for which I already had tickets, I was stoked. Sadly, the people around me talked through the whole set, and I got really angry, then hated the gig. And decided all-ages concerts suck. And whole thing with my Arch-Nemesis started. But that’s another story for another day. But then, at the last minute, he announced a solo gig at the Basement.
It was just phenomenal. He played all the best songs from the album. I dragged a rather unwilling Joel with me, but he says to this day that he’s so, so glad he went. I can’t wait to see FR again, and I discovered a heap of good authors (Auster, Bellow, etc) through the literary references in his songs.
